Confirmation at canterbury

We are so excited to welcome you to Confirmation at Canterbury United Methodist!  Confirmation is an ancient rite of passage where the Confirmand explores the tenets of the faith, what it means to be a Christian & a United Methodist, and receive the information they need  to decide if they want to continue in the journey of faith. Confirmation is a wonderful and immersive experience for our 6th grade students that will forever change their lives. I hope you will join us in Confirmation this year!

Confirmation is an exciting and incredibly meaningful commitment that both you and your student will make for their 6th grade year. We believe in the purpose and impact of the confirmation process. This is why we have a 2/3 participation guideline in order to be confirmed through our process. This 2/3 rule means that by registering for confirmation you are agreeing to have your student at the Sunday morning meetings 2/3 of the time as well as being at two of the three retreats. We do make exceptions for blended families as we know much of their schedule is not up to alteration.

Confirmation T-Shirt

Confirmation T-shirts are $20 each. These t-shirts will be worn to retreats and events. If you ordered more than one t-shirt, please adjust the quantity accordingly.

Ecumenical Visits

The central focus of Confirmation is helping our students strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ, grow in their relationship with God, and prepare to live as faithful members of the United Methodist Church.  As followers of Jesus Christ, we live in a world where respecting the commonalities that exist in the midst of the differences we have with others, even in matters of faith, will help us strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ.  Additionally, how we deal with those differences serves as a witness to those whose experience of faith is different than our own.  Ecumenical and interfaith visits are optional for those students and their parents who wish to meet and get to know people of other faith communities.  It has been a valuable opportunity for many families to share together.  Siblings are welcome to participate.

“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.  But do this with gentleness and respect.”

Flame Retreat

April 14-15, 2018
Camp Sumatanga

Our final Confirmation Retreat of the year is called Flame. We have chosen the theme of fire because it is at this retreat where we will kindle the spark that has been ignited in our hearts into a flame that will burn for the rest of our lives. This is by far the most important retreat of the year for our Confirmation students as we dive deep into our Confirmation vows and what it means to take on the call and the life of following Jesus.  While we will do some very serious work on this retreat there is still time for lot of fun together while playing, laughing, and developing even deeper bonds with each other and God. We will do all of this while at beautiful Camp Sumatanga. We strongly encourage parents to make this an absolute priority in students’ schedules as it is the capstone retreat to their entire Confirmation process. Registration opens March 12, 2018 and closes April 10, 2018.

Retreat Cost: $120

*If you have more than 1 child, please register each child separately

Ignite Retreat

February 16-19, 2018
Epworth by the Sea

The Ignite Retreat is designed to ignite a fire that warms our hearts for our God. On this retreat we will study and experience the life and teachings of John Wesley and the early roots of the Methodist movement. We will do this in first person where John Wesley ministered as we travel to Epworth by the Sea in the beautiful St. Simons, Georgia. This is a very exciting weekend, full of memories and experiences that will shape the students and be a time they will remember for a lifetime. Registration opens November 5, 2017 and will close January 16, 2018.

Retreat Cost: $475

“The retreat to Epworth is a longstanding tradition at Canterbury for our Confirmands as they make this pilgrimage. It is one of the things that makes our Confirmation program special. I appreciated the opportunity to learn, alongside the students, about our Methodist heritage in a place where John Wesley taught and preached.” – Lee Alice Estes

“This retreat was my favorite memory of the entire year!  It was so much fun getting to know and connect with all the kids and leaders. The last two worship services, organized entirely by the Confirmands, were so special.”   – Kelly Pyron

Confirmation Sunday

May 6, 2018
Traditional Service at 10:30 AM

The culmination of the whole year happens on Confirmation Sunday. It is in this service that we honor the Confirmand and confirm them as fully confessing members of Canterbury and the United Methodist Church. It is a very special Sunday that students and their families will remember for the rest of their lives. Please remember that unless otherwise agreed upon, in order for the student to be Confirmed, they will have to have met the 2/3 requirement for Confirmation.
