Senior Adult Ministry
The mission of the Senior Adult Ministry at Canterbury UMC is to minister to whole persons as they age. Our activities include educational, spiritual, physical and social events. We offer opportunities for worship, learning and service. Entertainment, fellowship and travel are a part of our program. The Senior Adult Ministry at Canterbury United Methodist Church is a many faceted program meeting the needs of older adults as they journey through life.
Senior Adult Luncheon and Program
Senior Adults meet the fourth Tuesday of each month ( Nov. and Dec. or the 3rd Tuesday) for a beautiful luncheon and an entertaining program. Card tales are available for bridge and other table games from 9 am – 4 pm.
Senior Adult Men’s Group
“Canterbury Men” meet throughout the year for lunch and an educational or entertaining program. These are times of fellowship, fun and a delicious meal.
Canterburians meet for a well rounded workout planned especially to meet their needs. A qualified fitness instructor leads the class in aerobic exercise. Classes meet Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 – 9:30 in the Covenant Classroom.
The Visitation Team
A team of senior adults visits homebound, sick and bereaved members of Canterbury. The volunteers take a flower gift to members who enjoy being remembered by their church family.
Hearts and Hands
Volunteers of CUMC send hand written notes to around 3,000 Canterburians each year. Members receive notes from Hearts and Hands after a hospitalization, a birth, a baptism or at the time of a death in the family. Some Hearts and Hands volunteers “adopt” a homebound member and visit regularly.
Conference on Aging
Each year expert speakers are invited to Canterbury to speak on Aging issues. The community is invited to attend. Check the website for more information or contact Fran Gatch at email@example.com.
Canterbury- Beeson Forum on Aging
The Forum on Aging addresses some of the most often asked and difficult to answer questions persons face in the aging process. If you are an aging adult or care for aging persons you will find information and inspiration at this conference. It offers education and training to professionals who work with older adults. Takes place yearly on the second Saturday of August.
Day Trips and Travel
Short trips around the Birmingham area are planned for senior adults to enjoy. Eating out, attending theater, symphony and various entertainments are trips enjoyed by many. Longer travel experiences are planned by a travel focus committee.
If you are caring for a spouse, child, or aging parent you do not walk alone. The Caregivers Fellowship is a group which meets for fellowship, a delicious meal, inspiration and education.
Tea & Sympathy
Encouraging and educational speakers support persons grieving the death of loved ones. As announced.
