Children

We are so happy to welcome you and your child to Canterbury! As United Methodists, we believe that children are important members of the family of God and are deserving of our very best efforts in ministry. Our prayer is that the bonds of faith that begin in early childhood will lead to an eternal relationship with God and with His church. Take a look at some of our programs below.

SUNDAY SCHOOL
Attention:
There will be no Children's Sunday School on May 27, Memorial Day weekend or July 1, for Independence Day weekend.
In Children's Sunday School, our goal is for children to form lasting relationships with God, with the Church, and with the members of their Christian faith community. We want them to experience being a part of the Kingdom of God now and forever! Classes are offered each Sunday morning from 9:15 - 10:15 a.m. for children two years through the sixth grade. Check-in is at the welcome station in the lobby of the Children's Building. For more information click here.

THE KINGDOME
Fourth and fifth graders can be found on the third floor of the Main Building enjoying the Workshop Rotation model of learning in the Canterbury KindDOME. Under the guidance of committed adult leaders, these children learn the major stories of Scripture in a two-year rotation that includes engaging assembly time, Bible memory work and hands-on activities. KingDOME kids and their friends are also invited to participate in First Fridays, Canterbury's unique community Bible Study on the first Friday of every month during the school year.

CONFIRMATION
The 6th grade Sunday School classes are part of Canterbury's comprehensive Confirmation Ministry. Children receive instruction in the biblical, theological and historical background needed to make a choice about a life-long commitment to faith in Jesus Christ, as well as full membership in the United Methodist Church. They also participate in special fellowship events (three retreats) and service projects. All of this culminates in the moving service of Confirmation and Membership held each year in May. For more information click here or contact Celia Smyly at 874-1557 or king.dome@canterburyumc.org.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT CONNECT
On Wednesday nights from September through April, Canterbury Children are engaged in a variety of age-appropriate activities during the program hour, 6:15 - 7:15 p.m. Childcare is provided for the youngest children under two, so that the rest of the family can get in on all of the action (including Bible Studies and special interest groups for adults). Three and four year old LAMBS meet on the first floor of the Children's building, enjoying lessons, art, and music for beginners. Children's Choir and CAMP Wednesday (Children's Activity and Mission Program) may be found on the second floor for children in 5K through 4th grade, along with CLUB 56 fellowship for 5th and 6th graders. Throughout the year, the Children's Choirs (ages 5K through 4th grade) sing in Worship services, present fabulous musical productions, and participate in "Singing Service" projects. For more information about Canterbury Children's Choirs, contact Amy Roberts, Children's Music Director, at 205-967-7672 or rroberts@charter.net.

CHILDCARE
For regularly scheduled worship services and on Wednesday evenings. SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN
Canterbury's B.U.D.S ministry is building understanding, discipleship, and support for special needs children and their families. It is available to any child, birth through 6th grade, at the request of their parents.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES

PURPOSE
The purpose of the Canterbury United Methodist Church Child Development Center is to offer children a loving environment that promotes positive growth in the areas of mental, emotional, social, and physical development. This program is a part of the United Methodist Church and it's beliefs are founded on the Christian religion based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. The staff hopes to instill within the children love, consideration, and tolerance of other people. The CDC is part of our ministry of service to Canterbury and our community. We provide parents with a Department of Human Resources.

PHILOSOPHY
Our philosophy is to provide a constructive, meaningful experience for young children of working families under the guidance of trained professionals in a Christian environment.
